Most of the recipes in this blog are intended to be made in a home kitchen, but this Dutch oven beef stew recipe is meant for . . . a Dutch oven. Don’t worry, though. Cooking something in a Dutch oven is a lot easier than you might assume, and it doesn’t require a trip to the mountains, either. Many people, myself included, do Dutch oven cooking in the backyard. My favorite thing to make in a Dutch oven is cobbler! Not only is Dutch oven cooking easy, but it’s kind of fun, too. It adds some variety to the culinary tempo of the week and is a great excuse to spend some time outdoors, even if it is in the backyard.
The secret to the healthy benefits of this Dutch oven beef stew recipe is the abundance of veggies throughout. Although the recipe calls for cans of green beans, corn, and tomatoes, you can include whatever vegetables you desire. And, as is so characteristic of a stew, you can never have too many vegetables. Although, I do think it’s possible to have too much meat, especially if you’re trying to keep the stew on the healthy side.
If you don’t have a Dutch oven, you can still prepare this recipe on the stovetop in a pot, preferably ceramic. If you have a Dutch oven, you’ll find the seasonings of the container will add richness to the stew flavor. It’s hard to explain, but you’ll definitely know what I’m talking about when you taste it!
